Summer Jobs in a Garden @ the Arc

The Organic Teaching Garden at THEARC is a 100% organic garden operating as a community project of Building Bridges Across the River developed to educate our community about nutrition and healthy eating.

The garden consists of 22 vegetable and herb boxes, an orchard of 18 trees, a cistern for collecting rain water and a hoop house which extends our planting season. During the summer & fall months, THEARC’s garden provides affordable, organic fruits and vegetables to residents of one of the largest food deserts in the city. Produce is sold weekdays during the Mid-Week Market Stand at THEARC, as well as every Saturday June-November from 9AM-2PM during the Ward 8 Farmer’s Market at THEARC.

This market operation not only helps to develop entrepreneurial skills and customer service training in the youth of Ward 8, but exposes them to employment opportunities in the fields of agriculture, sustainability and other green initiatives. Each year, BBAR hires teens and young adults from our community to work in the Organic Teaching Garden and at the Organic Garden Mid- Week Market Stand & Ward 8 Farmer’s Market. Our interns are responsible for planting/maintaining/ harvesting crops, taking soil samples, researching plants & assisting with check-out procedures with patrons. It is a great professional & personal growth experience for both our staff and interns!

In the Spring of 2013, BBAR formed a partnership with DC Greens, resulting in a established collaborative effort in which an urban farmer supervises the operations of the garden and the students who work there along with BBAR staff. Through education and access, DC Greens is bridging the gaps in our local food system to ensure that all residents of the District have a deeper connection to the sources of their food and can afford fresh, local fruit and vegetables. DC Greens works across multiple institutions, bringing people together so that we may work collectively toward a more just local food system. Our resident Urban Farmer and Garden Director of DC Greens is Kate Lee!
